Chrome Plating

The benefit of living in Detroit is the motherload of chrome plating shops around.., and the downside to having such a vast selection is not knowing how to evaluate the process offered by each shop. Is there something unique, important or plain old necessary for a Chambers top ? What questions should I be asking ? Is there a particular process that you all have found to be better than others? Seems that this is going to be a costly project here...at least $250...quite probably more. Almost all of the Detroit area shops are automotive or motorcycle based and are quite happy to do custom work, no problem. I want to be certain that whomever does the work is going to do the work that needs to be done for the top to be perect....like Mark's .... so folks, any guidance will be greatly appreciated ! If there were two or three shops to choose from, it would be a cinch, but this is a jungle of opportunities !

Now Berlyn, I'm shivering in 18 degrees and you've got your ac turned on !!! every place has got to have something and all we have are car shops....! So what should Iook for ?!

There actually are different levels, or grades of chrome plating, IIRC. there are 2 layers put down before the chrome layer...one of copper, one nickle, then chrome, IIRC. Some places buff the individual layers between coats...that's for show stuff, as it's labor intensive. I have no idea what "triple chrome plating" means, altho I've heard the term used before. Marketing perhaps???

I'd say the best bet is to ask to see some of there finished product, since you're local. The chromwe should be smooth, with no visible graining/sanding marks, etc.

Personally, I'm sending mine to Wichita when the time comes!

Hi Lowracer,
I couldn't find Robbies Hobbies in the online yellow pages - can you help me out?
There don't seeem to be ANY chrome shops left here. I even called Tennessee. I understand that copper is plated on in the chroming process (and one of the earlier posts confirms) and I'd love to refresh the plating on Beauty (Who arrived today - see 1953 copper coming thread!)
